What is the OpenMOQ Software Consortium?

The OpenMOQ Software Consortium logo.
The OpenMOQ Software Consortium is focused on advancing MOQ-based technology through high-performance, open-source software. Initiated by industry leaders, the consortium’s mission is to deliver practical software and implementations that enable the next generation of media transport and real-time streaming at global scale.
Why OpenMOQ?
Meeting the demands of ultra-low latency and massive scale requires a shared foundation built together. By collaborating on open-source streaming infrastructure, members create shared value for the entire ecosystem rather than solving the same problems in isolation.
Key goals of the consortium include:
- Shared cost and effort: Distribute development costs across organizations.
- Accelerated development: Leverage collective expertise for rapid MOQ advancement
- Enhanced interoperability: Ensure compatibility through standardized, open-source implementations
- Strategic differentiation: Focus resources on unique product value instead of rebuilding core infrastructure
- Market growth: Lower barriers to adoption and enable new real-time media use cases

Red5 officially joined the OpenMOQ Software Consortium as a Charter Member on December 10. By joining at this level, Red5 is contributing to the technical direction and long-term vision of open, interoperable MOQ-based streaming.
As part of the consortium, Red5 is collaborating alongside industry leaders and experts such as Akamai, CDN77, Synamedia, Bitmovin, Qualabs, and Vindral, as well as academic members including Universität Klagenfurt and Özyeğin University.
This mix of commercial and academic participation helps ensure that OpenMOQ evolves with both real-world production needs and strong research foundations.
You can get involved in the OpenMOQ Software Consortium by becoming an organizational member to help shape the roadmap, contribute engineering resources, and participate in the Steering Committee, or by staying informed through email updates on technical milestones, community events, workshops, and contribution opportunities.
